New Band Smell : Lifeless Satellites

Spring is kicking down the door here in Minnesota; pale flesh is being reintroduced to the sun, my ladyfriend has declared jihad on the neighborhood birds and off in the distance, I can hear the locals applauding the exploits of the hometown nine in their shiny new digs. But if you're not yet ready to see (and perhaps recoil from) your shadow, Lifeless Satellites is here to help. The long-gestating project of Minneapolis duo, Jeremy Devens and Jesse Alexander Green, their debut release, Internal Recurrence (available now on iTunes), is a beehive round of melancholy set against gently strummed acoustic guitars. Taken as a whole, Internal Recurrence wraps the listener in a blanket of acquiescent ambivalence that at times suggests what The Fragile would have sounded like had Trent Reznor spurned his studio trickery for a lone dreadnought. Likely to appeal to fans of Bon Iver, Mark Kozolek, Clint Mansell and anyone whose Easter dinner with the family went pear-shaped.

Mad Dog’s Hustle (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

This is the soundtrack to a 1974 blaxploitation film entitled Mad Dog’s Hustle. The film was only shown for less than three weeks in six theaters nationwide before disappearing into a baron wasteland of low-budget, poorly marketed cinema. This vinyl only release will be available for the first time ever only on white vinyl (“the man” even turned vinyl records white).*

This is the first release from Secret Stash that was immediately up my funky alley. Sure, you can pick up the noted blaxploitation releases like Shaft, Superfly, Black Ceasar, or Coffy but when you want something unique with the classic gritty sound, Mad Dog's Hustle is your pimp. It's full of the social turmoils and the struggle of the black man during a turbulent time. Again, Secret Stash delivers on the artwork, title and even press it on oppression white vinyl. Take it from me, they don't release actual Blaxploitation soundtracks like this every day! Buy it.

New songs from The Black Keys

Jeebus, this band just gets better with every release. You watch, these guys are quietly becoming legendary.

Earlier this week, Frank the Funkasaurus Rex danced to a new track from The Black Keys called Tighten Up, produced by Danger Mouse.

Immediately following, our friends at I Am Fuel, You Are Friends started streaming another new track called Next Girl. The Keys' new album is called Brothers and will be released on May 18th through Nonesuch.

New Video : The Hoof and The Heel : Fireworks (NSFW)

Montreal four-piece, The Hoof and The Heel released a new video, directed by Bryan Schlam, this past week. Schlam fell in love with the track and asked the band if he could direct. Their self-released debut EP, ...And All the Tigers, is out now. The video contains brief nudity, ya pervo.

For you non-Indianapolis residents, The Local Music Git Down was an all-day celebration, at Locals Only Art & Music Pub, that gathered 14 of our favorite bands and 6 DJ, all based in Indianapolis or Bloomington, Indiana. We rocked for 15 straight hours, until many of us could barely stand. While the concert perfomances raged, in a vacant, neighboring building we filmed sessions with all 14 of the bands that performed during the day.

Since forming in early 2008, Heavy Hometown has made a serious impression on the Indianapolis music scene. These (mostly) local dudes manage to put together some incredible songs that combine a polished, composed sound with an intimate, bedroom-recorded feel. Divided between Indy and Louisville, the trio is made up of guitarist John Wood and drummer Corey Barnes (who also split up the singing duties) and keyboardist Eric Park.

Their synth-laden garage pop brings to mind lo-fi legends like the American Analog Set, Galaxie 500 and at times Sonic Youth. The songs are thoughtful set pieces that sway from sad to hopeful and back again that grab onto you quickly and lure you down into their rabbit-hole. They self-released their debut album Action Figures last year.
